These lycra shirts protect you from sunburn and chafing. Rash guards also offer some protection from the cold. These work alot better than just wearing your old t-shirt.
When choosing a rash guard check out the UV protection that it offers. UPF 50+ will offer the most protection from the sun, saving you the time and money from having to lotion up your torso. If your surfing in really hot climates, go for a lighter color so you don't heat up as much. The thicker rash guards such as those offered by Oneill are better quality than really thin ones.
Rash guards come in short sleave and long sleave versions. Get one that is the right size for you. If it is too small you can still probably fit into it since usually stretch alot, but it won't offer the same UV protection.
Note:Rash guard is pretty much interchangeable with the compound word "rashguard" for you editor freaks out there.
