Surf Wax

surf wax

The important factor to consider with surf wax, AKA surfboard wax, is the temperature of the water your surfing in. Wax is available as warm, cool, and cold type. There is also a base coat wax. They are pretty much self explanatory terms.
  • Warm water Surf wax is used for water temps around 70-80 degrees. That would for the lucky ones out there and not for use at surfing-gear.net .

  • Cool water wax is for water temps around 60-70 degrees.

  • Cold water wax is for water temps around 50-60 degrees..that's us.

  • Base wax is for the first coat to give the surfboard a rough surface. That allows the top coat to go on a little easier.
There is very little technique to know for applying board wax. Just make small crosses all over the board with the base wax. Then apply the the top coat wax in circular motions until the wax forms small bumps. Or just rub it on however the hell you want, just make sure there's enough on the board.

Rather than adding fresh wax on top of old wax for every session, you can use a wax comb to cross up that old stuff and add some grip.

Eventually you will have to remove all that wax and start over with a fresh coat. You usually figure this out on a warm day when the black goo (the wax) starts sliding of your surfboard and onto the hood of your car.

Use the wax removal side of the aforementioned wax comb or just use an old credit card...you probably have a bunch of useless ones by now. Let it sit out in the sun deck facing up for about 10 minutes first, then scrape that stuff off. Alternately use your hair dryer on a low setting...don't let the board get higher than warm temperature. After scraping off the surf wax, make a big blackish goo ball out it and throw it at the cat. Remove the rest of the residue with a "pickle wax remover", and put the fresh stuff on.

Some of the most popular brands are Dr. Zog's and Sticky Bumps. We like Sticky Bumps but it's not like it matters that much, just don't try to use a candle.

Surf Wax on Boardshorts and Car Upholstery  Not rated yet
I have some nasty surf wax stains on my boardshorts. Any tips on how to remove these? Ditto for my car upholstery.
