Surf Lessons
The fastest and safest way to start surfing is to take some surf lessons. There are many places around the world where you can learn to surf but there are a few that not only make great places to learn to surf, but also happen to be popular vacation spots that anybody can enjoy.
Trying to teach yourself to surf usually only leads to frustration and can be downright dangerous. Let a pro take you out at the right time, right place, and with the right surfboard. They will also provide you with a wetsuit if necessary. Lessons include practicing some basics on dry land including paddling, pop up, stance, and surf etiquette. Then your out in the water with the instructor guiding you into your first waves.
A two hour lesson may be all that is needed to get started on your surfing adventures, but there are also week long surf camps offered. These are great to really jump start your surfing and are highly recommended.
All this assumes you can swim of course, and if you can't...well it's never to late to sign up for swim lessons.
