Hybrid Surfboards
So just what are hybrid surfboards anyway? Wikipedia describes a hybrid as "the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular objective or goal.". As such, hybrids are between two types of surfboards. That can be a lot of things. I would describe most as falling into these styles. - The Funboard/Semi-Gun Hybrid - Usually between 7-8ft and with an outline between a funboard and semi-gun. By that I mean the outline is not as full as a funboard even though it has the same length. The nose especially is not as wide as the semi-gun but definately more narrow than your roundish funboard nose.
- Fish-Shortboard Hybrid - Usually called the "post-modern" fish. Basically it is a shortboard with a wider nose and tail.
Here's where it gets confusing. Hybrids can also be a surfboard that is in between a longboard and shortboard, like a funboard. Or it can be used to refer to specific variations of funboards or longboards like the "mini-longboard" or the "egg". That's just crazy and it's why I define hybrids as the above categories, and it is usually when you see that term used. Feel free to comment below if you disagree, maybe we can sort this term out. Personally, I am not the biggest fan of hybrids. I find that standard quad and twinzer fish fill in the gap between longboard-funboard and shortboard more than adequately. But hey, we all have are biases.
