Gun Surfboards

Single Fin Gun Surfboard

If your looking for a description of a gun surfboard it means you don't need one. Guns are for big waves and nothing else. They are built narrow, long, and with pointed ends. The widest point is just forward of center and a gun is thick so the first big wave doesn't snap it like a toothpick. Fin setups are usually quad, thruster, or single fin. The usual length is 7.6ft up to 11ft.

Guns under 7.6ft might be referred to as "semi-guns", and are used for bigger surf but not, say, for Mavericks or Jaws.

The vast majority of surfers, including myself, usually don't need a gun surfboard even though I do have one. Most surfers just don't surf waves big enough to demand one. The semi-gun, on the other hand, can be a much needed addition to the quiver for those 10ft days.
