Funboard Review - The 7'2" Surftech Takayama Egg
by Chris
I purchased this surfboard looking for a good "funboard" to use when I just didn't feel like using my thruster. I read some good things about this one and the size seemed just like what I was looking for.
The Takayama Egg floats and paddles great. It is definately a wave catcher. I used many fin combinations with it. I altered the side fins, installed a big-ass center fin in it without side fins, tried big twins on the sides w/o center fin...you name it. At the end of the day the 2-1 fin setup the board came with was the best.
Let me tell you, this board took a beating. I mean brutal beatings at Ocean Beach-SF at low tide. It held up well with only minor dings at the end.
It is a fairly versatile funboard, and it could make it into suprisingly fast waves. It's not my first choice for fast breaking barrels, but no funboard would be. The epoxy nature of the board does make it feel slightly corky...but it is also what make it a wave catching machine; by that I mean very easy to paddle. It just depends what your looking for.
Ultimately I sold this board a couple of years later since I prefer quad fish as a floatier alternative. If your looking for a solid, tough funboard, this surfboard should not disappoint.
