Fish Surfboards

There are two categories of fish surfboards. Most would consider a real fish to be short, very wide, and thick. These "real fish" can come in two main types. The retro-fish is a classic deep keel twin fin such as those that were popular in the 1970's.

Most real fish sold today have a similar template to those boards but with more refined contours and different fin setups, such as quads and twinzers.

Yellow KG Twinzer Fin FishboardThese boards have significantly more float than a standard shortboard and have a different feel to them. You don't "release and catch" the fins like a shortboard. This means they don't have the performance for radical maneuvers like shortboard but they are very fun boards to ride.

The other main category of fishboard is the "post-modern" fish as some call it. These fishboards more closely resemble a thruster shortboard. The difference is that they are about 6 inches shorter and have a wider tail and nose as well as more thickness than a thruster. The difference, however, is not nearly as dramatic as a "real" or "true" fish. These boards are also sometimes called summer fish. They ride more like a shortboard but have a little more float making them better for smaller waves.
Traditional Fish Surfboard These surfboards are wider and thicker than standard shortboards. They have good floatation for their length and have a skatier feel to them. We like them here at surfing-gear, especially in smaller clean longboard waves...when you don't want to longboard.

The epoxy fish surfboard offers even more floation than the traditional (polyester) fish, as well as added strength. If you need another reason consider that they are lighter as well. Get one roughly 6 inches shorter than your standard thruster. Although there are large (over 6.5ft) fish, they start to ride more like a funboard. Don't go too much over 6ft if you want to have the advantages of a fish.

Surf Ride has a large selection of cutting edge fishboards.
