Boardshorts are called such because of their association with surfing, and, yep..surfboards. Also now wakeboarding, skimboarding, and bodyboarding. Boardshorts extend to the knee or just above. Now they're worn by anyone getting wet or just going out in warm weather.
Since long baggy clothes make men look shorter, you probably want to get ones shorter than knee length if your "vertically challenged".
A few things to look for in boardshorts.
Stichless inseams: Stiched inseams can cause itching and discomfort. Glued stichless inseams are more comfortable.
Microfiber Polyester: Microfiber polyester tends to dry fast and is quite comfortable. There are many variations of this so the name of the material may be slightly different. Avoid nylon because it is heavier and less comfortable. Some good boardshorts may also have spandex mixed with polyester.
Some of the most popular boardshorts are from Billabong and Quicksilver.
